What I Think

Apple/Intel

Right up front I ahve to say that I am a Mac fan. What that doesn’t mean is that I hate PCs. It’s a big world. The Microsoft Windows environment easily eclipses the Mac OS by a factor of over 10 to 1. Closer to 15 to 1, probaly more.

Since the beginning of Mac time, the chip inside has been anything but an Intel chip. These chips were always found in PCs alone. Six months ago Jobs, S prances around the stage of a conference centre and says, ‘It’s true’. The rumours were right and Apple was moving away from IBM’s PowerPC chip (a chip name I aways had problems with anyway) to a new Intel chip. OK. So we all collectively hold our breath and wait for the first Macs with these new chips. 3 weeks after their arrival, all seems to be good.

Now Apple has started an advertising campaign. Apple’s campaigns over the years have been ground breaking. The ‘1984’ campaign when they launch the Mac was revolutionary. Google it and you will agree. The iTunes then iPod ads an excellent and the iTunes Music Store ads are brilliant.

But last night I saw the new Apple ad for their Intel based iMac and MacBook Pro. Pathetic. Not only was the creative missing from this ad, it was nothing more than an attack on the PC market. Plus, it doesn’t make sense. Waste of time. Waste of money. Worst of all, unnecessarily antagonistic. Trying to play catch up with PC in one fell swoop is nothing short of stupid.
